Secret trip: Edward Gorey House

Much of the summer has been taking up with work, family obligations and wedding prep. So as August started to slip away I decided to plan a super secret surprise day for The Goog (well 3 people knew were we where going, but he didn't and that's the important part). So armed with the GPS, road snacks and vague idea of what we would do when we got there, we set out.
Inspired by some friends who go every summer, I steered us to the Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth Port on Cape Cod. After Gorey's death his cape house became a museum to showcase his works, and his own collections (rocks, cheese graters, books and other baubles).

The house may be small, but there is A LOT to look at. The $5 admission fee gets you a tour and all the time you want to wander the 4-5 rooms (including a kitchen). And of course, there's a shop too. Some of my favorite items were the large scale blow-ups of some of Gorey's Illustrations. This one is from the work he did for the PBS "Mystery" series. Be still my gothic victorian loving heart.....It's so sinister!

Along with the tour, there is an activity you can take part in. Hidden among the museum items is a scavenger hunt for all items from all the Ghashlycrumb Tinies. Here is an example of a more obvious one... "Z is for Zillah who drank too much gin." Some of them were actually quite tough! If you can find them all, (which we did with only a small bit of prompting for the final one) you get a little prize.

Outside, there is a large garden statue of "The Doubtful Guest". This was actually bigger than me, but he and I did have a discussion on what it means to "impose". There is also a very large and impressive magnolia tree, not exactly typical foliage for the Cape, but this one thrives. I wished it was flowering, but alas it was not.

If you are a Gorey fan...even just a little bit. This place is totally worth the drive (about 1.5 hours). Here....I'll put the website right here so you can check it out for yourself:

(And as a regular Masterpiece viewer--which is on its Mystery! series for the summer, hosted by Alan Cumming--I especially love the blow-up of that art!)
