Ok, I know, hot dogs are not the healthiest thing to eat, and that sometimes there may be a question as to what parts make up a hot dog...but they are good and it's summer, so I'm eating them! My parents are New Yorkers, so the hot dogs we usually ate growing up were Nathan's Famous All Beef Franks. They are "bun length" and thinner than say, a Fenway Frank. You can get them at the supermarket, and that's what we used for this little outing.

In my opinion of of the best way to have hot dogs is not on the grill, but rather going straight to the source of an open fire.

The key is not to just put your hot dog on a stick and shove it into an open flame. Soot is not a flavoring agent. If you can find one, a two pronged hot dog skewer is really the way to go (plus it's a multi-tasker, allowing you to later cook 2 marshmallows at once- That's right, 2 marshmallows, no waiting).

Skewer your dog and hold it at the edge of the fire. I think the slower you cook your hot dog the better it will be.

Really that's it, cook till it's to the degree of done-ness you like, put in a bun, add condiments (mustard, relish, spicy onions....) and enjoy in the great outdoors.

I don't think that fire is big enough to properly cook hot dogs. Throw some napalm on there next time for delicious flavor.

I'm thinking I might have to bring dogs along for the next overnight camping trip. A small luxury, but hey I usually drag a heavy pack along anyhow.
