I taste my lunch, my lunch tastes me back...

As some of you may know, one of the ways I have been trying to challenge myself is by trying new foods that I would normally shy away from. I don't consider myself a fussy eater by far, and I am willing to give almost anything a try, but lately I seem to be focusing on offal (organ meats). You may remember my foray into the world of calves liver...it didn't go as I hoped. But I continue on.
Inspired by a conversation with a friend last night who loves offal (thanks E!), the Goog and I set out to a favorite local El Salvadorian restaurant. This place is one of those hole-in- the wall type places that relays more on reputation and excellent food than it does on glitz, atmosphere, and advertising. And no joke, the food is amazing, home-style and fresh...but, most importantly for today's adventure, they serve tongue.
I have often said I would order the tongue, but it was mostly is jest, I usually go for the more familiar al pasor (pork), but today, I was on a mission and I (and The Goog) ordered tongue tacos.

As you can see it looks mostly like any other meat. Though you can clearly tell the top (a bit rougher) from the bottom (more smooth, like the bottom of your tongue). The texture was very tender and soft, slightly spongy, since this is the first time I am trying this I'm not sure if it's how they cooked it or if that is how tongue is. The taste is some how both mild and rich (beefy), and only slightly mineraly. I liked having the tomato to cut some of the richness, and the fresh tortillas....to die for.
While it won't take the place of my favortie al pastor, I can see myself ordering it again...perhaps trying it some of the other things they make, like the gorditas (or as I call them, "pillows of deliciousness). All in all I count this is as one of my more successful eating challenges.
